River Bend

A couple of years after Ben Asquith, CEO of DDDC, joined the team, he had a conversation with the Chief about the pressing need for a solution for affordable housing. Realizing that over 250 applicants were waiting on the Yukon Housing Corporation list, we knew we had to do something big.  It was then that we decided to create a residence that could support both TKC citizens and those on the Yukon Housing waiting list.

Working hand in hand, Evergreen Homes & Construction and Kobayashi & Zedda Architects joined forces to bring our fixed build contract to life. A job fair was hosted, welcoming TKC Citizens to come on abord. Everyone who attended and expressed interest in employment was given a job, regardless of their skillset. This project not only offers affordable housing options to those in need, but also generated employment and fostered skills development and training while aligning with DDDC’s social visions.

The hired employees were given on-the-job training and skills development. Some have even secured permanent management positions. The aim was to not only provide housing but also uplift TKC Citizens and help them thrive.  This opportunity truly sets the tone for where DDDC is today, and helps to guide the vision for future projects and investments.

Upon completing the first building a year ahead of schedule, November 1st, 2017 marked the move in date for the first 14 families. Today, all 5 buildings are now fully occupied, providing a comfortable haven for nearly 110 TKC citizens and Yukoners.

We’re proud to say that DDDC now has a multi-year lease agreement with TKC and Yukon Housing, ensuring the long-term stability of River Bend. To foster a sense of community, we’ve even added a playground to the property with more amenities to come soon. Our dedicated property management team works tirelessly to maintain the highest standards, ensuring that everything is brought back to its original shape between tenants.

River Bend is a testament to what we can achieve when we come together, with purpose.

“We must have a chance to help plan the future of this land if we are going to benefit from its development.”
